Norwegians And Mexicans Should Party All The Time
Tuesday Tianguis in Condesa, Mexico City is a treat. It’s the ideal place to shop for the best melons, pomegranite seeds, jicama, mango and, of course, fish tacos.
Located in the Northwest part of Colonia Condesa, (the main stalls centered down C/Pachuca between Juan de la Barrera and Agustin Melgar), the tianguis is a great place to pick up your fruit selection, have a bite to eat and mingle with locals. Just remember to bring a hefty bag with a lot of space because, at their prices, you’ll leave with much more than you anticipated.

So I am finally posting again, if for no other reason than to make sure that my giant head is no longer taking up the entire page when you visit our blog. And, of course, I’m sure you will visit us here in our virtual home more often if we post more than once every few weeks…. Sorry about that! The truth is, we have gotten caught up in getting settled in and building our new lives here in Mexico City (though we’re both headed back to the States this week with long shopping lists in hand!). We’re getting cozy in a new apartment, a new country, and for me, an exciting and challenging new job. As Mexico Country Director for Innovations for Poverty Action, I oversee all of our Mexico projects, which are rigorous evaluations of socially-oriented products and programs, particularity those related to microfinance. Needless to say, there has been a steep learning curve these first six weeks - from absorbing all the project minutia, to finding my management style, to figuring out business development strategies in a foreign country. Yeah it’s a lot to absorb. But it’s even more intense when you’re thrown into a new job where much of the business is conducted in another language. Sure, I could get communicate with the Chilangos pretty well when I got here, but constant introductions, emails and meetings entirely in Spanish add a whole new level to the learning curve - and make my brain hurt by the end of the day. I find it kind of funny that I’m getting to the point where I feel more confident explaining what a randomized control trial evaluation is in Spanish than chatting it up with the portero in our building… poco a poco I guess.
